Sara Lewkowicz is an award-winning photographer specializing in portraiture and documentary style photography. A native and current New Yorker residing on the Upper West Side, she received her MA from Ohio University in Athens and her bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Her work has been published in National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, Time Magazine, Stern, Der Spiegel, ESPN, Le Monde, L’Espresso, Das Magazin, Internatzionale, and numerous other magazines and newspapers.
She was named one of the 2015 PDN 30 by Photo District News, and
was awarded the LensCulture Emerging Talent Grant in 2016 and the Alexia
Student Grant in 2013. She has been awarded first place in contemporary issues in World
Press Photo 2016, third place in contemporary issues in World Press Photo 2014,
the Sony WPO L’Iris d’Or in 2014, the World Report Spotlight Award, and the
Ville de Perpignan Remi Ochlik Award, was named the 2013 College Photographer of the Year by POYi, and numerous other awards. Her work has been exhibited at festivals around the world, including China, Australia, and Italy.
When she is not taking pictures, she is the co-founder of a cat rescue called 10 Lives NYC. She spends her time growing sungold tomatoes, strawberries, and ramps in her community garden plot, socializing spicy kittens, and taking on new artistic disciplines like embroidery and papercutting. She is also an accomplished donut maker.
